National Ploughing Championships 2024
2024-09-20
Politician(s) lobbied: Heather Humphreys (Minister), Department of Social Protection
Intent: Farmers should be allowed to qualify for a contributory pension even if they have irregular contribution records due to the inherent unpredictability of farm earnings. Many small and family farmers, in particular, experience fluctuating incomes that are dependent on factors beyond their control, such as weather conditions, market prices, and rising operational costs. These challenges often force farmers to forego regular PRSI contributions in favour of sustaining their livelihoods and farms.

Intent: One key area for reform is increasing the baseline payment amount under the Farm Assist program, ensuring that it reflects the actual cost of living and the unique challenges inherent to farming. This would provide a safety net for farmers who have experienced a significant downturn in their income due to a disease breakdown on their farm.
